GLYCERIN:

Glycerin is primarily used as a base in some dermatological products.  Dermatological clinical trials showed that glycerin, unlike placebo creams, does not significantly cause smarting (a sharp local superficial sensation), stinging, itching, dryness, irritation and other adverse skin reactions.  In fact, there is almost no research study that reports adverse effects from glycerin use.  Thus, glycerin has good skin tolerability.  Moreover glycerin, like urea (a known emollient/moisturizer), exerts a significant improvement of skin dryness as compared with placebo creams.

SAMPAGUITA (JASMINUM SAMBAC L.) OIL

Sampaguita (Jasminum sambac L.) oil is not just an essential oil for that familiar pleasant scent that Filipinos love, but it also has other potential clinical uses.  Preliminary in vitro studies showed the potential of Sampaguita oil to have fungistatic (inhibits fungus growth of Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, etc.), antibacterial/bactericidal (kills bacteria like Escherichia coli, Compylobacter jejuni, etc.) and antioxidant properties.

SQUALENE OIL

Squalene oil is a well-known triterpene from shark liver oil, olive oil, palm oit, wheat-germ oil and rice bran oil.  Squalene is also the main component of skin surface polyunsaturated lipids and thus exerts a beneficial advantage in the skin as an emollient (moisturizing/hydrating substance).  Both preliminary in vitro and in vivo studies show that squalene oil has promising antioxidant and anti tumor properties.

COCONUT EXTRACT AND OIL

SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) is a chemical commonly incorporated in manydetergents and soapy cleaning agents.  SLS acts as a surfactant (soap-like chemical that enables water to mix with substances that normally will not dissolve in water) and it makes soap "slippery" (in form of soap "suds" or "bubbles").  However, numerous animal studies and some human studies showed that SLS has toxicity and irritability effects on the skin.  In fact, SLS is almost always used as a chemical agent that induces irritant contact dermatitis in derma-toxicological experiments.

On the other hand PG (propylene glycol) is commonly used primarily as a vehicle, solvent or emulsifier in cosmitics and topical medications.  However, PG may cause allergic/irritant contact dermatitis or even toxicity when repeatedly used.
